Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has said that Ethiopia can only be strengthened by embracing Medemer as the country’s sole path forward, emphasizing that lasting national prosperity depends on unity, mutual respect, and collective effort.

In an exclusive interview with Amhara Media Corporation, the Prime Minister stated that, like all Ethiopians, the Amhara people have played a pivotal role in the country’s historic transformations and welcomed the 2018 political reform with great hope and optimism.

The Prime Minister noted that the Amhara people, alongside other Ethiopians, made immense sacrifices during the political and economic transitions of 1974, 1991, and 2018 in pursuit of a more inclusive political system and a better future for the country.

According to the Prime Minister, one of the most significant achievements of the 2018 reform was the opening of Ethiopia’s previously restricted political and economic space, enabling broader political participation and creating new opportunities for democratic engagement. However, he cautioned that expanding political space also created opportunities for destabilizing forces. Drawing an analogy, he explained that just as opening a window allows fresh air to enter but may also let insects in, opening Ethiopia’s political landscape brought both positive change and unintended challenges. He said some actors exploited the newly created political environment by spreading divisive rhetoric and fueling instability.

According to the Prime Minister, certain groups even aligned themselves with forces seeking to undermine Ethiopia’s national interests and sovereignty, turning an atmosphere of hope into one of uncertainty and concern. Prime Minister Abiy added that the resulting confusion was felt across the country, affecting every region.

Speaking specifically about the Amhara Region, he said its people initially embraced the reform and strongly supported the government’s efforts. Over time, however, emerging challenges led many to question the direction of the reform and ask, “What has happened to us?” Nevertheless, the Prime Minister said that as the situation became clearer, the people increasingly recognized that Medemer offers the only sustainable path to national unity, stability, and shared prosperity. He added that this conviction was reaffirmed through the public’s support in this year’s election.

Concluding his remarks, Prime Minister Abiy stressed that Ethiopia’s future lies in preserving its long-standing unity while continuously renewing, strengthening, and expanding it through cooperation. He underscored that building a stronger Ethiopia requires all citizens to work together in a spirit of mutual respect, understanding, and solidarity.
