Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has stated that the people of Tigray must be guaranteed the freedom to express their preferred political alternatives and choose their representatives, stressing that the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) must not again govern the region as though it were its private enterprise.
The Prime Minister said the TPLF had long divided the people of Tigray along local and regional identities, including Raya, Agame, and Enderta, to consolidate its hold on power.
Following the TPLF’s collapse, such practices must not be allowed to recur, he emphasized, adding that Tigray would not become the property of any single political organization.
Prime Minister Abiy stressed that the democratic freedoms enjoyed in other parts of Ethiopia must also be guaranteed in Tigray. He added that the federal government would do its part to ensure the unity of the people of the region.
Recalling the severe hardship and oppression experienced by various areas under TPLF rule, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that the federal government would work equally for all areas of the country and that development would also come to Tigray.
