Getachew Reda, Ministerial Adviser for East African Affairs, has held discussions with Guang Cong, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, on regional security challenges, with particular emphasis on the situation in Tigray.
In a message posted on his official social media account, Getachew said their discussions covered the ongoing conflict in Sudan, upcoming elections in South Sudan, the situation in Somalia and, most importantly, developments in Tigray.
Getachew said he briefed the UN Special Envoy on developments since September 23 and discussed the potential role of the United Nations in supporting the newly established Caretaker Administration in Tigray.
He emphasized the need to strengthen rehabilitation efforts, accelerate the delivery of humanitarian assistance and facilitate the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their homes.
Getachew also underscored the importance of ensuring that the international community remains mindful of what he described as the destabilizing role of the Eritrean government in the wider Horn of Africa, particularly in Ethiopia.
For his part, Ambassador Guang Cong pledged to do everything within his capacity to ensure that the United Nations plays a meaningful role in promoting peace and stability across the region.
