Beyond beautification, Addis Ababa’s riverside development projects provide a foundation for the city’s long-term ecological sustainability and environmental well-being.

The recently inaugurated grand riverside development stretching from Entoto to Bambis demonstrates that Addis Ababa’s transformation is not merely about beautification and recreation, but also represents a profound scientific and strategic initiative aimed at restoring the city’s long-term ecological balance and environmental well-being.

In previous years, the major rivers originating from Entoto and flowing through the city were used as channels for industrial and domestic wastewater discharge, as well as solid waste disposal, resulting in ecological degradation and posing significant risks to public health.

Through the integrated development project implemented from Entoto to Bambis, filtration systems and concrete containment structures have been constructed to prevent polluted wastewater from entering the rivers. These measures have helped restore the rivers’ natural ecological functions and improve water quality.

Furthermore, this initiative has provided significant public health benefits by reducing the risks associated with waterborne and respiratory diseases, thereby contributing to a healthier urban environment.

The expansion of roads, concrete surfaces, and buildings contributes to rising urban temperatures. In contrast, the different types of trees planted along the corridor from Entoto to Bambis have increased the city’s green cover. These trees help reduce urban heat by providing shade, cooling the surrounding area, and absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

This has helped transform the city into a green lung that produces clean air, preserves air quality, and provides a comfortable environment for its residents.

Previously, during periods of high river flow, riverbanks were eroded, exposing surrounding areas to the risk of flooding. The new development project, however, was designed to preserve the river’s natural flow. Furthermore, its implementation was guided by scientific studies, helping to mitigate flood risks.

In addition, birds, insects, and aquatic organisms that had previously disappeared from the area due to pollution are now returning. This has paved the way for the restoration of ecological balance and biodiversity.

Beyond meeting residents’ needs for recreation, leisure, and relaxation, the development has laid the foundation for the future introduction of modern water-quality monitoring systems and the expansion of water-based transportation and recreational activities.

The riverside development project stretching from Entoto to Bambis is a transformative, intergenerational initiative that enhances Addis Ababa’s competitiveness at both continental and global levels. It creates a place where older generations can relax, today’s youth can thrive, and future generations of children can enjoy a comfortable and healthy environment.

Above all, this development marks a historic milestone in the city’s transition from an environment affected by pollution to a sustainable and healthy ecological hub.
