Aligned with this year’s African Union theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparation,” and following the AU General Assembly’s resolution to criminalize colonialism, Ethiopia is taking part in a two-day international conference hosted by Algeria.
Representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hirut Zemene, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the UN Economic Commission for Africa, is leading the Ethiopian delegation. Ambassador Muktar Mohamed, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Algeria, is also part of the delegation.
Held under the theme “Towards Redressing Historical Injustices Through the Criminalization of Colonialism,” the conference brings together Ministers of Foreign Affairs from several countries, Ambassadors of African states serving on the AU Peace and Security Council, representatives of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and Ambassador Bankole, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, representing the Chairperson of the African Union.
The conference is also attended by African historians and international law experts from various African countries, the Caribbean, and beyond. Over the course of two days, participants are discussing a wide range of humanitarian, social, economic, and political crimes committed against Africans and people of African descent during the colonial era.
The Addis Ababa African–CARICOM Declaration, issued during the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of African and Caribbean nations, was frequently referenced throughout the Algiers conference.
The conference will conclude with the issuance of a formal communiqué.
