Addis Ababa, the capital of Africa, is increasingly being recognized as a leading model and source of best practice for other African cities, thanks to its ongoing development initiatives and its technology-driven tax revenue collection system.
As part of efforts to share its experience in revenue mobilization, the city hosted mayors and city administrators from five African countries.
During their visit, the delegates reviewed the tax collection reforms implemented by the Addis Ababa Revenues Bureau, particularly those supported by modern technology, and assessed the tangible results achieved.
Lusaka City Mayor Chulando Chitangasa stated that Addis Ababa’s use of technology to prevent revenue leakage, combined with strong leadership, offers valuable lessons for her city.
She emphasized that the capital’s approach to managing and financing its development through locally generated revenue is especially commendable.
In addition, the Mayor of Lusaka expressed her delight at Ethiopia’s selection to host the global Climate Change Conference (COP 32), noting that the ongoing development activities clearly demonstrate both the country’s preparations for the conference and its overall readiness.
For his part, Dar es Salaam City Mayor Nuredin Bilal described the large-scale infrastructure projects currently underway in Addis Ababa as impressive, noting that Ethiopia’s development trajectory serves as a model for the African continent.
The mayor also expressed his satisfaction after observing that Addis Ababa is a beautiful, clean, and rapidly developing city.
Meanwhile, Amougo Biretinda, Deputy Director of the Budget Office of Yaoundé City, stated that the development being implemented in Addis Ababa is highly effective.
The deputy director further confirmed that the revenue collected by the city is being properly and transparently utilized for development purposes.
The visiting mayors and city officials concluded their visit by pledging to apply the positive experiences and best practices they gained from Addis Ababa in their respective countries.
