Addis Ababa’s strong development progress and its success in hosting international sporting events over the past five years have boosted Ethiopia’s prospects of staging a major global athletics championship, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said.
She highlighted the successful hosting of Grand Prix competitions in running, and boxing, noting that these events are helping position Addis Ababa as an emerging destination for international sports.

Mayor Adanech added that the city’s widespread public enthusiasm for sports will be a key asset in Ethiopia’s bid to host the 2027 World Athletics Championships.
Presenting her nine-month performance report, the mayor noted that the city’s green development coverage has expanded significantly to 22 percent, up from 2.8 percent five years ago, with a target of reaching 30 percent next year.

She reaffirmed the city administration’s commitment to sustaining momentum in corridor development and accelerating urban modernization efforts.
