Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie said that transport infrastructure completed during the rainy season is helping restore residents’ dignity and improve their safety.
The mayor noted that four major terminal and parking infrastructure projects, along with new roads, drainage systems and disaster prevention works, were completed and opened to the public in Addis Ababa during the recently concluded rainy season. She said the projects were designed to protect the dignity and safety of citizens, particularly those from low-income communities.
Speaking at the conclusion of the Addis Ababa City Administration’s review of its first-quarter performance for the current fiscal year, Mayor Adanech said several major projects had been completed and made operational during the rainy season.
She highlighted the improvements in public transport services, noting that residents previously had to wait for buses and taxis under the scorching sun, often enduring overcrowding, pushing and shoving.
The newly developed terminals now provide passengers with a more comfortable and dignified environment, allowing them to sit indoors while waiting for transport, the mayor said.
The new facilities also feature clean public toilets, food outlets and designated shopping areas, according to the report.
In addition to the terminal projects, Mayor Adanech said extensive work had been carried out during the rainy season to build new roads, pedestrian walkways and cycling lanes, as well as improve drainage infrastructure and implement disaster prevention measures across various parts of the city.
