Ethiopia is emerging as a preferred destination for investors interested in the electric transport sector, according to a high-level discussion held between Zeleke Temesgen(PhD), Commissioner of the Ethiopian Investment Commission, and Henrik Orling, Vice President for Business Development at the Škoda Group.
During the meeting, Commissioner Zeleke highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the role of the private sector in accelerating economic growth. The commissioner emphasized that Ethiopia has established conducive legal and institutional frameworks that support private investment in electric mobility and related technologies.
Zeleke noted that Ethiopia’s rapid urbanization, combined with a population exceeding 130 million and a currently low vehicle-to-population ratio, presents extensive market opportunities for investors. He encouraged Škoda to seize these opportunities and expand its footprint in Ethiopia’s electric transport ecosystem.
Henrik Orling stated that Škoda is exploring opportunities to begin its investment in Ethiopia by producing technology inputs for electric vehicles and potentially supporting the expansion of rapid bus transit networks. The commissioner also expressed the company’s interest in diversifying into additional electric transport solutions within the country.
Škoda, a leading Czech company with over 165 years of experience in manufacturing automotive and transport components, remains a major player across the Middle East and Europe. In 2024 alone, the company supplied over 925,000 vehicles to the global market.
