The integration of the green legacy initiative and corridor development is making Addis Ababa a preferred destination for investment and tourism. At a time when cities around the world are facing the challenges of ensuring sustainable development amid the threats posed by climate change, the Ethiopian capital is emerging as a preferred destination for investment and tourism by integrating ecological restoration with corridor development.
The Green Legacy program, launched to make the city resilient to climate change, beautiful, and more livable for its residents, has transformed Addis Ababa by complementing the ongoing corridor development projects.
This year’s Green Legacy campaign, launched under the slogan “Let’s Plant Hope,” is progressing at the planned pace with broad public participation. The city aims to plant six million seedlings this year, and within just one month, more than four million seedlings have already been planted.
Over the past seven years, 90 million seedlings have been planted across the capital. As a result, the city’s green cover has increased from 8 percent to 24 percent. Previously degraded areas have become greener, and rivers that had deteriorated are beginning to recover. Beyond environmental protection, the Green Legacy Initiative also places strong emphasis on food security. Economically valuable seedlings, along with ornamental and shade trees that enhance the city’s beauty, are being planted extensively.
The city administration’s efforts to transform Addis Ababa into a modern, environmentally sustainable city, combined with corridor development projects, are making the capital increasingly attractive for investment and tourism.
Speaking at this year’s Green Legacy Initiative launch, Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie said: “What we are planting is hope, development, greenery, shade, our food, and ultimately prosperity that we will pass on to future generations.” This green legacy initiative, which actively involves the public in making the city beautiful, clean, and comfortable to live in, has continued this year with even greater momentum.
