Ethiopia’s historic National Dialogue Conference officially opened in Addis Ababa, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to foster national unity, reconciliation, and lasting peace through an inclusive, Ethiopian-led process.

Addressing the opening ceremony, the Executive Secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu (PhD), described the conference as a landmark opportunity to strengthen national cohesion and build a peaceful future through constructive dialogue.

The executive secretary, Workneh emphasized that dialogue remains the most effective means of resolving differences and shaping a shared national vision.

“Ethiopia is not a country searching for its identity. It is a nation with an authentic history and the capacity to resolve its own challenges,” he said.

Workneh stressed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through broad participation, mutual respect, and a willingness to accommodate diverse perspectives. He noted that the conference provides Ethiopians with a unique platform to address longstanding national challenges through peaceful engagement and consensus-building.

Reaffirming IGAD’s commitment, he pledged the regional organization’s continued support for Ethiopia’s efforts to advance reconciliation, stability, and regional peace.

The National Dialogue Conference has brought together approximately 4,000 participants representing communities from across Ethiopia and the diaspora.

Participants will deliberate on key national agenda items identified through an extensive nationwide consultation process. Widely regarded as a defining moment in Ethiopia’s modern history, the conference is expected to lay the foundation for stronger national consensus, enhanced social cohesion, and a durable framework for lasting peace.
