Former President of Nigeria Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, speaking at the launch of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Conference, recalled Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s decision, made three years ago, to pursue wheat self-sufficiency for Ethiopia.

“At that time, in Africa, we did not know much about wheat because we depended on wheat imports from Ukraine and Russia,” he said.

Obasanjo commended Prime Minister Abiy for what he described as the successful realization of that vision. He stated that Ethiopia has become self-sufficient in wheat production and has progressed to becoming a net exporter of wheat. He described this development as a significant opportunity for Ethiopia to serve as a food basket for Africa.

Obasanjo added that the achievement also provides an opportunity for Ethiopia to work with other African countries to uplift the continent.
