President Taye Commends Ethiopian Public Health Institute’s Role in Tackling Global Health Threats

President Taye Atske-Selassie stated that the Ethiopian government firmly believes that safeguarding the health of its citizens is the cornerstone of national development, economic growth, and national security.

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) celebrated its 100th anniversary in the presence of President Taye Atske-Selassie.

Speaking at the event, the President emphasized that the Ethiopian Public Health Institute plays a vital role in protecting both the health of citizens and the country’s security.

He noted that the Institute’s century-long journey demonstrates Ethiopia’s commitment to improving public health and strengthening its healthcare system.

The President stressed that national sovereignty and security are closely linked to public health, adding that Ethiopia’s strength and future progress depend on protecting the health of its people.

He also highlighted the significant role of medical research and healthcare institutions in achieving this objective.

In particular, he praised the Ethiopian Public Health Institute for its outstanding performance since its establishment in responding to major global health crises, epidemics, and infectious diseases.

He specifically commended the Institute’s rapid response and scientific leadership during outbreaks such as COVID-19, Mpox, and Marburg virus disease, stating that its efforts brought recognition and honor to Ethiopia.

President Taye reiterated that the Ethiopian government firmly believes that protecting the health of its citizens is the primary foundation of national development, economic growth, and national security.

Recalling that the government considers strong institutions to be the foundation of nation-building, he affirmed that special attention will be given to strengthening the Institute’s infrastructure and technological capacity.

He further stated that the government will create an enabling policy to help the Institute become more effective and internationally competitive in the future.

Building on past achievements, he emphasized the need to modernize the country’s capacity to prevent public health threats and to respond rapidly to emergencies.

He also underscored the importance of establishing advanced information management and analytical systems that use modern technology to predict disease outbreaks in advance and support timely public health interventions.

The President said that the Institute’s centennial celebration serves as an opportunity to commemorate its past achievements, recognize its present accomplishments, and plan for an even more ambitious future.

The president stated that the Institute’s resilience, longevity, and continued success are rooted in the dedication and strength of its employees and researchers.

President Taye reaffirmed that the government will provide its full support to ensure the successful fulfillment of the Institute’s mission, according to ENA.
