Speaking on the occasion of the 90th Anniversary of the Ethiopian Air Force, Lieutenant General Yilma Merdassa, Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force, highlighted the pivotal role the Air Force has played in positioning Ethiopia among Africa’s leading air force nations.

Lieutenant General Yilma emphasized that the anniversary is not merely a time to reflect on the past, but a testament to nine decades of resilience, aerial defense, and unwavering excellence in service of the nation.

Over the past 90 years, the Ethiopian Air Force has safeguarded the country’s sovereignty, actively participated in peacekeeping missions, and stood steadfast against national challenges.

Describing the “Black Lion” air show as a vivid display of national pride and aeronautical expertise, the Commander noted that the participation of African air force leaders, international aviation executives, and strategic partners elevated the event into a global platform of unity and cooperation.

Lieutenant General Yilma stressed that air shows are not merely entertainment; they serve as strategic instruments that inspire national imagination, nurture aspiring young officers, motivate students to pursue innovation, and strengthen public confidence in the country’s technological future.

Yilma further noted that the aircraft displayed during the event showcased not only operational capability, but also Ethiopia’s progress toward industrial transformation, fifth-generation air force readiness, and enhanced global partnerships.

The commander also extended appreciation to the United Arab Emirates Air Force and Air Defense for their support.

Concluding his remarks, the Commander expressed gratitude to the pilots, technicians, and security professionals who tirelessly contributed, often without rest, to make these achievements possible.
