For many years, Ethiopia’s tourism sector received limited attention, preventing the country from fully utilizing from its vast natural, cultural, and historical assets. As a result, the sector remained underdeveloped and its potential largely untapped. However, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) and guided by the philosophy of Medemer (synergy), the government has placed renewed and strategic emphasis on tourism development. These efforts are reversing years of neglect and transforming the sector into one marked by visible progress and growing impact.
Across various regions of Ethiopia, comprehensive tourism development initiatives are underway, revitalizing long-forgotten natural landscapes and historical sites and turning them into significant sources of income. These initiatives are playing a crucial role in reinvigorating the tourism industry and enhancing Ethiopia’s appeal as a global destination.
Deputy Director General of the Federal Tourism Training Institute, Gezahagn Abate, stated that tourist destinations developed under the Medemer government philosophy have significantly reshaped Ethiopia’s image.
The Deputy Director noted that the sector’s revival has not only increased the number of domestic and international visitors but has also extended their length of stay in the country.
Recalling decades of neglect, the Deputy Director General emphasized that the special attention currently given to tourism is yielding tangible results by prolonging visitor stays and contributing substantially to the national economy.
Gezahagn further explained that the current season, characterized by vibrant public and cultural festivals, offers immense potential for promoting Ethiopia’s rich heritage and attracting tourists from around the world.
The deputy director also highlighted that such public festivals play a vital role in strengthening national unity and social cohesion.
