The House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is convening its 30th regular session of the fifth year of its current parliamentary term.

During the session, members of Parliament raised a wide range of national issues related to Ethiopia’s social, economic, and political affairs.

Among the key issues discussed was the implementation of the Pretoria Peace Agreement, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) providing detailed responses and explanations regarding the government’s position on the peace process and the current situation in the Tigray region.

Prime Minister Abiy stated that the Pretoria Peace Agreement represented a historic opportunity and opened a new chapter of hope for the people of Tigray region by creating opportunities for peace, reconstruction, and sustainable development.

However, the Prime Minister expressed concern that certain factions within the TPLF militant group have been working against the continuation of the peace process. He said these groups continue to view conflict and instability as a means of advancing their political objectives, similar to their previous approach.

According to the Prime Minister, the ongoing political and security challenges in the region are threatening the hopes and opportunities created by the Pretoria Agreement and are affecting efforts aimed at restoring peace, rebuilding communities, and ensuring stability for the people of Tigray region.

Members of Parliament also raised concerns over the activities of armed groups operating in the region, including allegations of cooperation with external forces and Ethiopia’s long-standing adversaries.

Responding to the questions raised by Parliament members, Prime Minister Abiy reaffirmed that the Pretoria Peace Agreement remains the foundation for achieving sustainable peace in Ethiopia.

He emphasized that the government made significant sacrifices to achieve peace, including taking difficult measures and accepting considerable costs in order to provide an opportunity for reconciliation and recovery.

The Prime Minister noted that the agreement was reached with the broader interest of Ethiopia and its people in mind. He said the government made extensive efforts to support peace, including allowing the return of resources and opportunities that could have otherwise been pursued through different means, demonstrating its commitment to ending conflict. Nevertheless, Prime Minister Abiy said there are still individuals and groups who do not want peace to prevail in Tigray region and who continue to create instability, disrupt the peaceful lives of citizens, and undermine the region’s recovery efforts.

He further stated that some leaders and actors behind these activities have secured comfortable lives for themselves and their families abroad while ordinary citizens in the region continue to face the consequences of instability and uncertainty.

The Prime Minister stressed that lasting peace requires a commitment from all stakeholders to prioritize the interests of the people, uphold the principles of the Pretoria Agreement, and work together toward reconstruction, development, and a stable future for the people of Tigray region and Ethiopia as a whole.
