The United Nations has officially honored Ethiopia for its monumental contributions to international peacekeeping, recognizing the nation as a vital pillar of global stability.
With a legacy of service dating back to the 1960s, Ethiopia currently stands as the tenth-largest contributor to UN missions, with over 1,500 personnel deployed to some of the world’s most challenging conflict zones.

Ethiopia’s journey with UN peacekeeping began in 1960 during the UN Operation in the Congo. Since then, the nation has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the UN Charter. Notably, from 2016 to 2019, Ethiopia was the world’s largest contributor of peacekeepers, with massive deployments in Abyei, Liberia, and Darfur. Today, 1,527 Ethiopian military and police personnel continue this tradition of excellence.
A significant highlight of the UN’s recognition is the role of the 164 Ethiopian women currently serving in the field. Their presence has been cited as a key factor in improving mission effectiveness, as they build deep trust with local communities and provide indispensable gender perspectives in complex environments.
“Thank you, Ethiopia, for your service,” the UN statement concluded, reaffirming the indispensable bond between the international body and one of its most dedicated member states.
