Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos (PhD), has called on African nations to strengthen their unity in order to withstand the multifaceted challenges facing the continent.
In his opening remarks at the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union, currently underway in Addis Ababa, Minister Gedion noted that shifting global geopolitical dynamics are eroding multilateralism and international cooperation.
Gedion highlighted the global competition for technological dominance, control of critical minerals, and strategic logistics routes.
Against this backdrop, the Minister emphasized that Africa must reinforce its unity to build resilience against challenges emerging from various directions.

The Minister expressed confidence that the ongoing Executive Council meeting would further consolidate African unity and renew the continent’s commitment to shared goals and collective progress.
Gedion underscored the importance of strengthening African ownership in advancing African solutions to African problems. He also stressed the need for concerted efforts to promote equity within the global financial system, secure Africa’s fair representation on the United Nations Security Council, and adopt a unified position on debt relief and climate finance.
Highlighting Ethiopia’s preparations to host COP32, the Minister stated that the conference presents a vital opportunity for Africa to assert global leadership in climate action and sustainable solutions.
Noting that Africa is endowed with water resources and major rivers, he underscored that the approach regarding these shared resources must be guided by principles that respect the needs, circumstances, and aspirations of all stakeholders.
