Addis Ababa, the diplomatic capital of Africa, is hosting the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU).

Opening the session, Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos (PhD), emphasized that Africa must harness its vast water resources to drive sustainable development across the continent.

The Foreign Minister welcomed participants and expressed confidence that the meeting would facilitate meaningful and constructive deliberations on key continental priorities, including peace and security, climate change, and water resource management.

Gedion noted that while Africa has made notable development progress in recent years, substantial efforts are still required to fully realize the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Highlighting that this year’s session places special focus on water resources, he underscored the need for the sector to receive greater attention and investment.

The Foreign Minister further stressed that Africa, endowed with numerous major and extensive river systems, must utilize its water potential wisely and equitably to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.

The session is attended by officials from the African Union Commission and Foreign Ministers of AU Member States.
