Ethiopian Cities’ Corridor Development Heralds Urban Revitalization, Opens New Chapter in Modern Living

The corridor and urban renewal initiative, which began in Addis Ababa, is now registering significant progress nationwide, enhancing accessibility, improving infrastructure, and beautifying cities.

The development activities are guided by strategic directions that strengthen the modern economy, governance, environmental sustainability, public services, and overall quality of life for residents.

For instance, in the 2025/26 fiscal year, modern infrastructure projects are underway in 21 Ethiopian cities, aiming to create comfortable environment for residents and visitors alike.

Engineers who spoke to the ENA noted that corridor and urban development projects are fostering a more conducive urban lifestyle by harmoniously integrating historical identity with modern infrastructure.

Yodit Gebrealif(PhD), a smart city expert at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, stated that corridor development goes beyond infrastructure expansion, empowering citizens and enhancing modern urban living.

Yodit highlighted that initiatives such as corridor development and the establishment of one-stop service centers serve as vital foundations for building a modern city.

Similarly, Mesfin Alemu, an architecture teacher and urban planner at the same university, emphasized that corridor development has transformed the previously fragmented and uncoordinated urban management system into a more organized, attractive, and visually appealing landscape.

According to him, the notable progress witnessed in corridor development across Ethiopian cities marks a turning point, revitalizing urban centers and laying the groundwork for a modern lifestyle.

The experts further underlined that corridor and urban renewal initiatives, contribute meaningfully to urban development by promoting healthier living conditions and improving service delivery.

Experts stressed the importance of safeguarding and preserving these transformative projects so as to pass to the upcoming generations.

Finally, experts called for sustained efforts to modernize Ethiopian cities by fostering knowledge-driven, skill-based urban growth that ensures healthy expansion and improved service provision.
