In a message shared on her official social media page this morning, Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced that through Food Security and Skills Youth Internship Program 15,492 beneficiaries emerged from dependency to productivity.
The mayor emphasized that Addis Ababa is making tangible progress in uplifting vulnerable residents, aligning with the city’s broader vision of achieving “Zero Dependency and Poverty,” one of the five “Zero Goals” introduced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed(PhD)
Over the past five years, more than 695,000 residents who were previously enrolled in the Safety Net Program have transitioned into productive livelihoods, enabling them to become self-sufficient and support their families.

In addition, since the launch of the on-the-job training initiative in 2021, nearly 49,000 citizens, including 8,852 youth who graduated today, have successfully moved out of poverty and unemployment. Through structured support and linkages, these individuals have completed their training and progressed into business ownership and productive economic activities.
Addressing the graduates, Mayor Adanech delivered an encouraging message: “Dear graduates, our city needs strong, diligent young people like you, individuals who make the most of the opportunities they receive, transform their lives, and become role models for others. Your achievements so far reflect your hard work and determination. We are confident that you will go even further—creating job opportunities, becoming business owners, and contributing meaningfully to our city’s growth.”
