The Chairperson of the National Election Board of Ethiopia, Melatwork Hailu, stated that the strong voter turnout played a crucial role in the success of Ethiopiaβs Seventh General Election.
The Chairperson provided a detailed briefing to the media on the overall conduct of the election, which was held on June 1, 2026.
According to her, the Seventh General Election, in which numerous political parties and independent candidates competed, was successfully concluded.
She explained that the boardβs extensive and coordinated preparations during the pre-election period laid a solid foundation for the successful conduct of the election.
Highlighting the high level of public enthusiasm demonstrated on election day, the Chairperson commended voters for their participation despite challenging weather conditions.
She noted that voting began at 12:00 a.m. and recalled that the board extended voting hours until midnight in polling stations, including those in Addis Ababa, where long queues of voters were observed.
The Chairperson said that voters waited patiently in line and exercised their democratic rights well into the evening.
She emphasized that this remarkable level of public participation was a key factor in the successful completion of the election.
