Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has described the Bishoftu Mega Airport, currently under construction, as an unparalleled development project in both Ethiopian and African history. He made the remarks during a visit to inspect the progress of the project.

During the visit, the Prime Minister stated that the airport represents a massive undertaking unlike any previously seen in Ethiopia or across Africa.

According to Abiy, the airport is a continental-scale mega project, both in terms of the vast area it covers, and the number of machines and equipment deployed at the construction site.

The Prime Minister toured the project together with senior government officials and reviewed the ongoing construction activities.

He noted that, in the past, many projects suffered from weak project management systems, making it difficult to determine when they would be completed. As a result, numerous projects failed to meet their scheduled deadlines and required quality standards.

However, he stressed that the Bishoftu Mega Airport project is set to transform these ways of working through a modern and efficient project management approach.

The Prime Minister stated that more than 8,000 workers are currently engaged in the construction around the clock. In addition, between 3,800 and 4,000 heavy machines and vehicles are operating across an area stretching approximately 30 kilometers.

Describing the undertaking as equivalent to building a small town, Prime Minister Abiy said the project is being managed through advanced technological monitoring and supervision systems.

He further noted that the government is developing a new culture and capacity for project management by implementing similar large-scale projects with greater speed, efficiency, and technological support.
