A large-scale mango cluster development project is gaining momentum in Gura Ferda District of the Bench Sheko Zone, Southwest Ethiopia Peoples’ Region, as the country continues to expand its commercial horticulture sector.
According to a message shared by Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture Facebook page, S-Boom Agro Industry PLC is developing an 824-hectare mango plantation in the district.
The plantation features five high-yield mango varietiesβTommy, Kent, Keitt, Apple Mango, and Alphonsoβselected to enhance productivity and meet both domestic and export market demand.
The large-scale investment is expected to boost agricultural production, create employment opportunities, and increase Ethiopia’s export earnings through the horticulture sector.
The project is part of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to expand commercial agriculture, strengthen value chains, and promote export-oriented horticultural production.
At the national level, Ethiopia produced more than 11 million quintals of mangoes in 2026 from over 72,000 hectares of cultivated land. Among the total cultivated area, 3,722.66 hectares were developed under the cluster farming approach, producing 727,489.22 quintals of mangoes.
The cluster farming model is designed to improve productivity, facilitate access to modern farming practices, and strengthen market linkages for growers.
The continued expansion of mango cluster farming reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to modernizing its agricultural sector, creating rural employment, and increasing the country’s competitiveness in international horticultural markets.
