An ultra-fast and modern electric vehicle (EV) charging station capable of serving 24 vehicles simultaneously was officially inaugurated today in Addis Ababa.

Constructed by the Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) in collaboration with the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC), the facility is expected to significantly strengthen the national strategy aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles across the country.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ethiopian Electric Utility Chief Executive Officer Engineer Getu Geremew stated that the institution is intensifying efforts to expand charging infrastructure nationwide, with plans to establish more than 40 charging stations across Ethiopia.

He noted that the ongoing infrastructure development is not confined to Addis Ababa, emphasizing that preparations are underway to extend the service to major cities throughout the country.

Engineer Getu further revealed that design works are currently in progress for the construction of 16 charging stations along the Ethio–Djibouti corridor, a strategic trade route that serves as the lifeline of Ethiopia’s import and export activities.

State Minister of Transport and Logistics Bereo Hassan, on his part, said that the government has set a target of constructing 2,230 fast EV charging stations nationwide to support the growing transition toward electric mobility.

According to the State Minister, Addis Ababa alone requires 1,176 charging stations. However, only about 200 stations have so far been completed and are currently providing services, underscoring the need for continued investment and expansion in the sector.
