Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), in an interview with NBC Ethiopia on the country’s tourism sector, said that tourism has a significant role to play in creating employment opportunities.
He stressed that strengthening the tourism sector could play a vital role in addressing job creation challenges.

The Prime Minister said that Ethiopia’s tourism sector requires extensive development. By investing in and properly utilizing the country’s tourism resources, Ethiopia can not only create more jobs but also generate substantial revenue.
Abiy stated that more than 370 million people worldwide gain employment through the tourism sector each year. He added that if Ethiopia effectively develops its tourism potentials, it can secure a meaningful share of these opportunities and transform the country’s economy.

He further explained that 10.9 percent of annual employment is generated through the tourism sector and emphasized that greater investment and focus on the sector would bring significant success.
The Prime Minister also highlighted that tourism contributes to job creation both directly and indirectly.

He explained that tourists spend foreign currency on hotel services and on purchasing goods produced within the country, which not only increases national income but also expands employment opportunities across various sectors of the economy. Therefore, the Prime Minister called for continued efforts to further develop the tourism sector by expanding tourist destinations already under development and making full use of Ethiopia’s abundant tourism resources.
