Addressing the 30th session of the House of Peoples’ Representatives, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) stated that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee Arabica.
Noting that Ethiopia has been exporting coffee for years, he said that the country had gained only USD 3.3 billion from coffee export in the past 17 years. However, the Prime Minister said the East African nation has earned USD 3.1 billion during the current Fiscal year.
“Had we not planted the plant, nurtured it, harvested it, processed it, packed it and transported it, we would not have achieved this result”, the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Abiy also indicated that the local coffee consumption has significantly increased compared to the levels recorded 10 years ago. As the country’s population has grown, demand for coffee has also increased.
According to him, the country’s success has been achieved while simultaneously meeting domestic demand.
The prime minister attributed this significant milestone to the government’s reform agenda.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Abiy said that Ethiopia is not only the leading coffee exporter in Africa but also the world’s third-largest coffee exporter after, Brazil and Colombia.
