Jimma University has formalized a series of strategic Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with five leading higher education institutions in Hargeisa and Borema: Amoud University, Gollis University, Edna Adan University, Adal Medical University, and the University of Hargeisa.
The agreements were concluded during a dedicated tour by a high-level Jimma University delegation that traveled to Hargeisa and Borema to engage directly with partner institutions across multiple campuses.
The delegation was led by Jemal Abafita (PhD), President of Jimma University, and included Tadesse Habtamu (PhD), Academic Vice President, and Yemanebrihan Kelemework (PhD), Director for Continuing and Distance Education. They were accompanied by Ambassador Teshome Shunde Hamito, Consul General of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Hargeisa, and Mr. Mahir Abduselam Ahmed, Second Secretary.
The mission visited Borama, Hargeisa, and other key locations to hold substantive discussions and finalize the partnerships firsthand, underscoring the university’s commitment to building sustainable international collaborations through direct engagement and mutual dialogue.
The comprehensive agreements establish a robust framework for bilateral cooperation, encompassing faculty and student mobility, joint research enterprises, curriculum harmonization, and institutional capacity development. Core areas of collaboration include academic credit transfers, joint supervision of graduate theses, scholarly publications, and the co-organization of conferences and professional training programs.
While the overarching framework applies to all partners, specific focus areas vary by institution. Partnerships with Amoud and Gollis Universities emphasize the exploration of dual and joint degree programs, alongside intensive workshops and capacity-building initiatives. Collaborations with Edna Adan University and Adal Medical University are anchored in advancing medical education, fostering healthcare innovation, and developing clinical research to train the next generation of healthcare professionals. The MoU with the University of Hargeisa reinforces general academic exchange and institutional capacity building.
These agreements reflect a unified commitment to promoting academic excellence, fostering regional integration, and strengthening the enduring people-to-people connections.
