Ethiopia has reached another historic environmental milestone, planting 805.3 million tree seedlings in a single day and surpassing its ambitious nationwide target of 800 million seedlings.
The achievement marks a major success for the country’s Green Legacy Initiative, reinforcing Ethiopia’s growing reputation as a global leader in climate action, environmental restoration, and sustainable development.
The one-day campaign is part of Ethiopia’s broader goal of planting 8 billion tree seedlings during the current rainy season.l across the nation.
Millions of Ethiopians from across the country answered the call, including government officials, youth, students, farmers, community organizations, private sector representatives, development partners, and citizens from all walks of life.
Launching the nationwide campaign earlier in the day, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) stressed that the Green Legacy Initiative is about much more than planting trees. He said the initiative is restoring degraded landscapes, strengthening food security, protecting natural resources, enhancing resilience to climate change, and helping build a prosperous, modern, and self-reliant Ethiopia that reflects the aspirations of its people.
Announcing the final results during the closing ceremony, the Prime Minister confirmed that Ethiopia had planted 805.3 million tree seedlings in a single day, exceeding the national target and setting a new benchmark for the initiative.
Held under the theme “Let’s Plant Hope,” this year’s campaign represents another significant milestone in Ethiopia’s nationwide environmental movement.
The initiative continues to contribute to ecological restoration, biodiversity conservation, watershed protection, and sustainable economic growth while promoting a greener and more climate-resilient future.
The successful nationwide effort reflects the unity, commitment, and shared responsibility of the Ethiopian people in protecting the environment for future generations.
Beyond breaking another record, the accomplishment demonstrates that collective action can deliver meaningful results in the fight against climate change and in building a healthier, more sustainable future for the country.
