Ethiopia is demonstrating its commitment to advancing women’s participation in leadership under the Medemer (Synergy) philosophy, Minister of Culture and Tourism Selamawit Kassa said.

The minister made the remarks during a panel discussion at the African Women Political Leaders Forum, held as part of the Second African Political Parties Summit at the Adwa Victory Memorial, in Addis Ababa.

Selamawit noted that women’s representation in Ethiopia’s House of People’s Representatives and the Council of Ministers has been increasing.

She said this demonstrates that women are ready to engage in political discourse and assume leadership responsibilities when given the opportunity.

As reported by ENA, the Medemer philosophy, formulated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, teaches that the strength of a society is measured by the contributions of all its members, she explained.

Highlighting women’s participation in political leadership as a key development agenda, the minister stressed the need for discussions and action today to achieve the goals set for future generations.

She further emphasized that inclusiveness in Africa’s development agenda is not merely a matter of gender equality but also concerns development, justice, national productivity, and democratic governance.

The minister noted that providing opportunities alone is not sufficient and that women need continuous support throughout their leadership journeys.

She stressed that commitments to equality should be translated into concrete actions through laws, policies, budget allocations, and accountability mechanisms.

Women, she added, should have meaningful participation in decision-making on national security, infrastructure, education, and technology.

She also underscored the importance of recognizing women as entrepreneurs and capital owners, noting that access to education and technology is fundamental to advancing women’s leadership.

The Minister further called for African solutions to African challenges, emphasizing the importance of drawing lessons from history, community institutions, and indigenous philosophies.
