Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) said his government will work diligently to ensure that Ethiopia secures access to a maritime outlet.

Speaking after being reappointed as Prime Minister at the first regular inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Prime Minister Abiy said Ethiopia will pursue this objective based on the principle of reciprocity.

He also stated that Ethiopia will engage in international bilateral and multilateral relations based on its national interests and work cooperatively with others.

Describing neighboring countries as naturally connected friends, the Prime Minister said Ethiopia will continue its policy of working with all countries in peace, mutual interest and cooperation.

Prime Minister Abiy reiterated that Ethiopia’s civilization cannot be realized without access to the sea, adding that his government will work relentlessly to ensure that the country has access to the sea.

The Prime Minister also said his government will be committed to building robust defence force.

“We will work to build a defense force that takes into account Ethiopia’s greatness, the current global and regional circumstances, as well as the future trajectory of the world,” He said.

The Prime Minister said Ethiopia will continue to build a capable force that can anticipate and prevent problems before they arise, defend against them when they occur, and, if they escalate, overcome them—as its forefathers did and in keeping with the country’s long-standing tradition.
