Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) has outlined Ethiopia’s experience in economic reform, digital transformation, infrastructure development and environmental restoration during his opening remarks at the 2nd African Political Parties Summit 2026.

Sharing the experience of his government and the Prosperity Party, the Prime Minister highlighted the Homegrown Economic Reform Agenda, which aims to expand opportunities for businesses to invest, increase production and create jobs.

He noted that the reforms have included opening the telecommunications sector to competition, allowing foreign participation in the banking sector and transitioning to market-based exchange rates.

PM Abiy also emphasized the importance of communicating the reforms clearly to citizens and ensuring that their benefits are reflected in the public services they access.

On digital transformation, he stated that more than 53 million residents have registered for Fayda, Ethiopia’s national digital identification system.

He cited access to financial services for farmers and the ability of students to apply to universities remotely as examples of how digital identification can facilitate access to essential services.

Reflecting on Ethiopia’s infrastructure development experience, the Prime Minister highlighted the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), noting the contributions of Ethiopians at home and in the diaspora to its financing and completion.

He said that when his government assumed office, the project had stalled, prompting the government to reorganize its implementation and mobilize support to bring it to completion. He added that the dam now supplies electricity to households and businesses in Ethiopia and neighboring countries.

The Prime Minister also addressed environmental protection and climate resilience, describing healthy soil and reliable water resources as essential to agricultural livelihoods. He noted that droughts and floods can reverse years of farmers’ efforts.

In this regard, he highlighted the Green Legacy Initiative, stating that citizens, communities and institutions have planted more than 56 billion seedlings since 2019 as part of efforts to restore degraded land and protect water sources.
