Bilateral relations between Ethiopia and India have shown remarkable progress since India gained independence from colonial rule, particularly in the diplomatic, economic, and social spheres.
In an exclusive interview with Addis Media Network Digital, Mulualem Hailemariam, a lecturer in Political Science and International Relations at Wachemo University, stated that India is among the leading countries maintaining strong bilateral and multilateral diplomatic relations with Ethiopia.
According to the lecturer, shifts in the global political and economic landscape have significantly contributed to strengthening ties between the two nations.
Speaking on investment, Mulualem noted that Indian investment in Ethiopia has reached between 4 and 5 billion US dollars. Mulualem emphasized that large-scale investments by Indian companies have created substantial employment opportunities across the country and played a vital role in boosting domestic production.

Highlighting educational cooperation, Mulualem explained that many Ethiopians are currently pursuing studies in Indian institutions, ranging from undergraduate programs to PhD-level studies. This academic exchange, Mulualem said, reflects the depth and breadth of the longstanding relationship between Ethiopia and India.
The lecturer also pointed out that both countries are expanding their influence on the global stage through their membership in the BRICS bloc.
Mulualem underscored the importance of South–South cooperation, noting that it enables developing countries to access alternative sources of financing, utilize alternative trade currencies, and establish trade relations using their own currencies, potentially paving the way for a common trade framework.
Finally, Mulualem emphasized that India’s success in building a strong, domestically driven economy offers valuable lessons for Ethiopia as it pursues its own development goals.
