Haramaya University hosted the distinguished plant breeder and World Food Prize laureate, Professor Gebisa Ejeta, who delivered an inspiring public lecture urging African youth to embrace education, innovation, and creativity as the foundations of Africa’s transformation.
Speaking under the theme “African Youth for Africa’s Transformation,” Professor Ejeta emphasized that the continent’s future lies firmly in the hands of its young generation.
“African youth must educate themselves to claim their rightful role in Africa’s transformation,” he stated, highlighting the central role of human capital development in driving sustainable progress.
Professor Ejeta underscored that Africa’s long-term growth and prosperity depend on harnessing creativity, innovation, and strong managerial skills.
The professor cited global success stories, including the United States, Europe, the Asian Tigers, and BRICS nations, as examples of economies propelled by science, technology, and innovation. Noting that Africa is home to more than 400 million young people aged 15–35, the professor stressed the urgency of empowering youth through quality education, technology, and creative thinking to address both local and global challenges.

Overall, I used my time productively to achieve results.”
