Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie said the city administration has transformed Kitel Tera in the Merkato area into a modern residential community, with 960 housing units completed within four months.
In a message posted on her official social media account, the mayor thanked God for enabling the administration to turn the area into a clean, green and dignified place for residents.
According to the mayor, 960 homes were constructed and handed back to residents who had previously been relocated from the site.
Kitel Tera had previously been characterized by overcrowding, poor living conditions and inadequate infrastructure. The area had also experienced deadly fires that claimed residentsβ lives, she said.
The site has now been redeveloped into what the mayor described as a modern and comfortable residential community comprising nine G+8 buildings, with a total of 960 housing units.
Named as the βMerkato Goodness Residential Village,β the development covers 11,000 square meters and includes 371 commercial shops intended to create employment opportunities.
The new residential complex also features childrenβs playgrounds and a range of sports facilities, including football, basketball, handball and volleyball courts, as well as fitness areas. Other facilities include resident parking, electric-vehicle charging stations, internal asphalt roads, communal rooftop terraces, elevators, and modern electricity and sewage systems.
Mayor Adanech described the project as a major example of the transformation of several run-down areas in Merkato that have historically been known as Tera areas, including Kitel Tera, Chid Tera, Gebs Tera, Sar Tera and Bomb Tera.
βThis is what it means to turn words into action,β the mayor said, emphasizing the administrationβs stated commitment to carrying out projects around the clock to transform difficult living environments and enable residents to begin a new chapter in their lives.
She said the city administration would continue placing people at the center of its work and strengthening efforts to make Addis Ababa cleaner, more attractive and more comfortable for its residents.
The mayor also expressed gratitude to individuals and organizations that contributed to the project, specifically mentioning Professor Senait Fisseha and those involved in the construction.
