Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie announced the inauguration and launch of the Koye Wastewater Treatment Plant, along with several other water infrastructure projects designed to expand access to clean drinking water and improve wastewater management across the city.In a statement shared on her official social media page, the Mayor said the modern Koye wastewater treatment facility has the capacity to treat 20,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day.
The newly launched water infrastructure, meanwhile, adds 60,000 cubic meters of clean drinking water per day to the city’s supply.“To increase the supply of clean drinking water, we have developed numerous boreholes in areas including Tulu Gudo, Legedadi Section 2, Bireket Residential Compound, Bole Arabsa, and others,” Mayor Adanech said. As a result of these investments, the Mayor said Addis Ababa’s daily water production capacity has increased significantly, from 525,000 cubic meters five years ago to 910,000 cubic meters today.
The city has also made substantial progress in expanding wastewater treatment capacity. For years, rivers in Addis Ababa have been affected by wastewater and solid waste pollution.According to the Mayor, the city administration has therefore given greater attention to wastewater infrastructure and treatment since the reform. She said the city’s wastewater treatment capacity, which stood at just 20,000 cubic meters per day in 2009 E.C., has now increased to more than 253,000 cubic meters per day, including the capacity added through the Koye project.
Mayor Adanech said the projects will help protect public health and hygiene, reduce pollution in the city’s rivers, and strengthen environmental protection.“Our goal of making Addis Ababa, true to its name, a new, beautiful, clean, healthy, green, modern, and livable city for generations to come will continue to be strengthened,” she said.The Mayor also expressed her appreciation to all those who contributed to the projects, particularly the World Bank for financing various development initiatives, the Oromia Regional State for supporting the joint development of areas where water sources are located, and the farmers who provided land that had supported their livelihoods for generations.
She further thanked the leadership and professionals of the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority for their tireless efforts in bringing the projects to completion.“These achievements demonstrate our continued commitment to expanding essential infrastructure, protecting the environment, and ensuring a healthier and more livable Addis Ababa for current and future generations,” the Mayor stated.
