In a statement released on its official social media platform under the title “A New Dawn of Revival Born of Hard Work and Effort,” the Addis Ababa Mayor’s Office said multifaceted changes have been registered through planned efforts to make Addis Ababa a convenient, clean, competitive, and modern city for its residents.
According to the Mayor’s Office, mega projects and development initiatives carried out in the city have not only addressed residents’ development and service needs but have also contributed to the city’s revival and enabled it to become a pioneer of prosperity for other cities.
Over the past five years, more than 60,000 projects that benefited the community have been completed and put into service, while more than 20,000 projects were completed in the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year alone, the Mayor’s Office said. It added that the implementation of projects under a 24/7 work culture has played a significant role in the city’s revival.
The Mayor’s Office said road infrastructure developed in Addis Ababa over the past five years has not only enhanced the city’s modernization but also created a conducive environment for residents to move safely. It said improvements in road network coverage and quality have helped facilitate transportation in the city.
According to the Office, transportation terminals and parking facilities, which were previously unavailable in the city, have been constructed at various locations, helping reduce inconvenience and risks for residents.
The urban renewal efforts planned and implemented to improve residents’ living conditions have also contributed to Addis Ababa’s rapid revival, the Mayor’s Office said. It added that the efforts have enabled the city to turn into action plans to transform Addis Ababa that had previously been considered impossible.
The Office said green development efforts aimed at reducing pollution and making the city more livable and conducive to health have increased Addis Ababa’s green coverage from 2.8 percent to 24 percent.
It further said that, as a result of the attention given to cleanliness, Addis Ababa has become one of the 10 cleanest cities in Africa.
The infrastructure achievements registered in Addis Ababa have not only enabled the city to provide modern services to its residents but have also helped it transition from a transit point for tourists to a tourist destination, according to the Mayor’s Office.
In conference tourism, Addis Ababa hosted more than 220 international and continental conferences in the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year alone, demonstrating what the Office described as the city’s revival.
