For years, Ethiopia’s image was often portrayed in a one-sided manner by international media outlets.
Today, however, African storytellers, digital content creators, and cultural ambassadors gathering in Addis Ababa are helping reshape that narrative.
Addis Ababa, the diplomatic capital and lifeblood of Africa, which has increasingly become a host of major global events in recent years, has successfully and vibrantly hosted the inaugural African Social Media Influencers Summit (ASMIS 2026).
Through the eyes of Africans who understand the continent best, Addis Ababa is being reimagined as a city of transformation from its urban mobility and development achievements to the cherished Ethiopian traditional coffee ceremony.
“The hospitality I experienced upon arriving in Addis Ababa was overwhelming,” said Maria No, a celebrity from Namibia, describing her first impression of the Ethiopian capital.
She noted that the city is clean, well-organized, and equipped with infrastructure designed to meet the needs of its residents, adding that it serves as an inspiring example for the rest of Africa. She further emphasized that Ethiopia is increasingly being viewed as a model for the development of modern African cities.

Participants also highlighted that beyond the impressive infrastructure, what made their visit to Ethiopia truly memorable were the country’s deep-rooted cultural values. For many African influencers, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony became a powerful symbol of respect, identity, and hospitality.
Another content creator said the first thing he wanted upon arriving at Bole International Airport was authentic Ethiopian coffee, describing Ethiopia as a country that has successfully blended modernization with its ancient identity.
He added that Ethiopia’s historic role as a political and social driving force for Africa remains significant today, noting that many influencers drew inspiration from the country’s resilience and proud history as a nation that was never colonized.
Another participant remarked that Ethiopia has demonstrated in practice what citizen-centered development looks like and how a country can preserve its sovereignty, identity, and culture while advancing modernization. He stressed that Addis Ababa stands as a model city worthy of emulation across Africa.

Since the summit, influencers have been sharing their experiences with millions of followers across social media platforms, portraying Ethiopia as a nation striving to become a leading destination for heritage, culture, and tourism. The message is clear: Addis Ababa is the city of choice not only to visit Ethiopia, but also to learn what it means to be a proud African.
