In a message shared on her official social media platform this afternoon, Addis Ababa City Mayor Adanech Abiebie stated, “A country erects monuments to honor its artists as a testament to their enduring contributions.”

Marking Patriots’ Victory Day, the Mayor noted that Ethiopians are remembering patriots who played heroic roles across various fields.

“A nation is not built only through development projects, border protection, a flag, and laws,” she stated. “It is built through the collective efforts of its people, a shared sense of identity, and great artistic achievements.”

She emphasized that Addis Ababa has embraced this vision by erecting statues of prominent artists who have made significant contributions to the country.

The city administration, she added, has placed art at the center of corridor development and major projects.

The newly inaugurated monuments are dedicated to distinguished public figures who stood for peace, unity, justice, freedom, and equality, including Tsegaye Gebre-Medhin, Tilahun Gessesse, Mahmoud Ahmed, Ali Birra, Sebhat Gebre-Egziabher, and Hachalu Hundessa.

The Mayor further noted that, “In addition, it is recognized that many intellectuals, as national heroes, deserve our respect. Therefore, this effort is not the end, but rather the beginning.”
