Addis Ababa’s Corridor Development Experience Fuels Hawassa City’s Urban Transformation

Hawassa City Mayor Tiratu Beyene told Addis Media Network that the experience and best practices gained from Addis Ababa have significantly contributed to the success of Hawassa City’s corridor development.

The corridor development initiative, first launched in Addis Ababa, has now expanded to many cities and rural areas across Ethiopia. The program is playing a vital role in creating competitive and livable urban centers nationwide.

Hawassa, one of the cities that has notably enhanced its stature and beauty through the initiative, is currently intensively implementing the second phase of its corridor development project.

Mayor Tiratu explained that when the project was initially introduced in Addis Ababa, there was limited prior experience. However, with the direct support of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, strong institutional capacity was built and valuable lessons were learned.

The Mayor further noted that Hawassa City Administration successfully adapted the best practices of Addis Ababa corridor development experience by fully understanding the concept and addressing implementation gaps, the city was able to strengthen its capacity and execute the project more effectively.

According to the mayor, Hawassa has greatly benefited from drawing on that experience.

Since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) initiated the corridor development concept to accelerate urban transformation and improve citizens’ living conditions particularly beginning in Addis Ababa extensive work has been undertaken.

The mayor also announced that the corridor development project in Hawassa has created 2,265 permanent and temporary job opportunities.
