It has been highlighted that Addis Ababa’s status as Africa’s leading diplomatic and conference center is generating substantial diplomatic and economic benefits for Ethiopia.
As the diplomatic capital of Africa and a prominent international conference destination, Addis Ababa delivers significant value not only to Ethiopia but also to the continent at large.
Mulugeta Ayele(PhD), a peace and security lecturer and researcher at Addis Ababa University, told AMN Digital that the city’s role as an international conference hub is producing wide-ranging diplomatic and economic advantages for the country.

Mulugeta noted that Addis Ababa’s position as the headquarters of the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa firmly establishes it as the continent’s political decision-making center. This, he explained, significantly enhances Ethiopia’s political visibility and strategic influence.
The hosting of numerous major continental and global meetings in Addis Ababa enables Ethiopia not only to contribute to agenda-setting but also to clearly articulate its positions and strengthen its influence on regional and international affairs.
Addis Ababa has emerged as one of the world’s foremost diplomatic centers, reflecting its expanding global relevance and stature.
Mulugeta further emphasized that conference tourism plays a crucial role in shaping and strengthening a country’s international image.
The Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector also delivers direct economic benefits to the nation and its people.
