The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) has successfully completed all the necessary preparations to conduct Ethiopia’s 7th General Election across the country, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s democratic journey.
The successful conclusion of the Board’s preparatory activities, including the completion of candidate registration, has been widely recognized as a major achievement reflecting institutional readiness, organizational capacity, and commitment to ensuring a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process.
The growing participation of political parties and media institutions have also been described as an encouraging and constructive development. The active engagement of competing political parties demonstrates increasing democratic inclusiveness, healthy political competition, and rising public interest in the electoral process.
Likewise, the active involvement of diverse media institutions has played a pivotal role in strengthening transparency, enhancing civic awareness, and broadening citizens’ access to balanced, credible, and timely electoral information across the country. Their continued engagement is significantly contributing to the promotion of an informed electorate and fostering greater public confidence in the overall electoral process.
Meanwhile, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has officially announced the deployment of its Election Observation Mission to Ethiopia ahead of the country’s 7th General Election, scheduled to take place on 1 June 2026.

The deployment of African observer missions further underscores the importance of African-led democratic support mechanisms and highlights a shared continental responsibility in advancing credible and peaceful elections within the region.
Currently, election observers from different African institutions and international organizations have already arrived in Ethiopia and are actively working to ensure the successful conduct of the election with professionalism, neutrality, and integrity. Observers from diverse backgrounds is expected to be deployed across different parts of the country to monitor the electoral process.
The swift and well-coordinated engagement of both the African Union (AU) and Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is expected to be widely regarded as a strong demonstration of diplomatic maturity, regional solidarity, and effective institutional cooperation.
The involvement of the AU and IGAD is expected to further enhance the credibility, transparency, and integrity of Ethiopia’s electoral process, while also reinforcing Africans’ growing sense of ownership, confidence, and leadership in strengthening democratic institutions across the continent.
The deployment of observer missions comes at a time when Ethiopia is receiving heightened regional and international attention regarding its democratic transition, electoral inclusiveness, and political stability. As Africa’s second-most populous nation, the country’s 7th General Election is widely viewed as an important test of institutional credibility, democratic governance, and the continued progress of democratic reforms in the region.
