The Horn of Africa is one of the most strategically important regions in global geopolitics, while also being exposed to complex security threats.
Its proximity to the maritime routes of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the spread of cross-border terrorism, maritime piracy, and competing interests among foreign powers have left the region facing persistent security challenges.
Against this complex regional backdrop, the role of the Ethiopian National Defense Force has extended beyond protecting the country’s sovereignty to playing a significant role in ensuring peace and security across the wider region.
Institutional reforms undertaken by the military in recent years have enhanced its military capabilities in terms of quality and effectiveness.
In particular, integrating intelligence and security technologies, modern combat strategies, and artificial intelligence has helped strengthen the military’s defensive capabilities.
These modern defense capabilities have enabled the force to counter threats on land and in the air through intelligence-based operations and precision strikes.
As a result, the Ethiopian National Defense Force plays a significant role in containing threats posed by terrorist groups and other destabilizing forces seeking to undermine peace in East Africa.

The force’s role also extends beyond Ethiopia’s borders, as demonstrated by its participation in peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the African Union and the United Nations.
By carrying out peacekeeping responsibilities assigned to it in Sudan, Somalia, and other countries across the region with a high degree of military professionalism, respect for the law, and a humanitarian approach, the force has earned continental and international recognition for its contributions to regional peace.
In contemporary geopolitical analysis, military strength cannot be considered separately from a country’s economic security.
As Ethiopia independently implements major infrastructure projects, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the responsibility for protecting these strategic assets against internal and external threats rests with the Ethiopian National Defense Force.
Beyond serving as a symbol of Ethiopia’s independence and sovereignty, the Ethiopian National Defense Force is a key pillar supporting peace and security across the African region.
Sustaining and further strengthening the institution’s modern capabilities will not only help safeguard Ethiopia’s continued existence and sovereignty but also enable the wider region to move away from terrorism and instability toward greater economic integration and lasting stability.
