In recent years, the wide-ranging development projects undertaken in Addis Ababa, the diplomatic capital of Africa, have not only transformed the city’s landscape but have also become a major topic of discussion both at home and abroad.
The capital’s rapid progress demonstrates that meaningful change can be achieved within a relatively short period when government and citizens work hand in hand.
Addis Ababa’s transformation offers valuable lessons for other African cities striving for sustainable urban growth.
Home to diverse nations and nationalities as well as foreign residents, Addis Ababa stands out as a city where people live together in mutual respect, free from divisions based on language or religion. Beyond its visible infrastructure development, the city has made notable strides in strengthening peace and security.
Over the past six months alone, Addis Ababa has successfully hosted nearly 150 regional, continental, and international events. Through coordinated efforts by the city administration and strong public solidarity, major religious, cultural, and public celebrations attended by millions have been conducted peacefully and vibrantly, without incident.
The city has also welcomed high-level dignitaries, including United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, along with numerous African heads of state and leaders of international institutions.
The successful hosting of these high-profile conferences underscores the effectiveness of the city administration’s efforts in promoting peace, security, and international engagement.
Addis Ababa has increasingly become a preferred conference tourism destination both on the African continent and globally.
