On the eve of its seventh general election, Ethiopia is entering a historic period of reflection as citizens calmly weigh their choices. By mobilizing a staggering more than 54.57 million registered voters, the country is writing a vibrant new chapter in African political history.
The success of this grand national endeavor rests on milestones achieved during recent years of reform, which laid the groundwork for free elections and a flourishing multi-party system. Key among these are the establishment of an independent National Election Board, the expansion of democratic space, and the active participation of competing political parties.
Furthermore, this historic milestone has been enriched by an unprecedented sense of national ownership among citizens and heightened political engagement. Intellectuals have contributed sophisticated political analyses and constructive policy alternatives, while political parties have engaged in debates driven by ideas and knowledge. A remarkably peaceful campaign period and balanced media coverage have added further merit to the process.
Globally and continentally, the size of this electorate ranks among the largest, significantly accelerating Ethiopia’s transition toward institutional capacity and democratic consolidation. This moment will be recorded in history as a resounding demonstration to the world that Ethiopia, and Africa as a whole, are no longer passive spectators of democratic nation-building. Instead, they are frontline actors capable of shaping their own destiny.
This massive popular movement firmly proclaims that political power in the country is no longer determined by force or clandestine conspiracies, but solely by the active participation of citizens and the secrecy of the ballot.
The dramatic surge in voter registration—from 38.2 million in 2021 to 57.4 million today—is a historic leap that lays a solid foundation for a civilized, peaceful transition of power. Above all, it stands as an unshakeable guarantee of peace for a prosperous and stable Ethiopia.
