Renowned for its innovative and sustainable land management practices, the Konso community has long been recognized for its ability to combat soil erosion, conserve water resources, and maintain agricultural productivity in mountainous and arid environments. Its traditional environmental management system has earned international recognition as a model of sustainable development.
At the heart of this legacy is the community’s distinctive stone terracing system, which has been used for generations to preserve soil fertility, regulate water runoff, and protect local ecosystems. The practice continues to serve as a valuable example of how indigenous knowledge can contribute to environmental sustainability.
As Addis Ababa advances major corridor development projects, riverbank rehabilitation programs, and urban greening initiatives, the expertise of the Konso community is being utilized to support efforts in natural resource conservation, soil protection, water management, and community engagement.
