Today, we had a high-level and constructive engagement with Jon Ridgeon, Chief Executive Officer of World Athletics, on advancing strategic cooperation in sports development and global athletics.
The discussion centered on Ethiopia’s ambition to host the 2028 Ultimate Championship and the 2031 World Athletics Championships, reflecting the country’s growing role in international sport. As part of the dialogue, we reviewed the major stadiums and sports infrastructure projects under development in Addis Ababa, which are strengthening the city’s position as a future hub for global sporting events.

We also underscored Addis Ababa’s proven track record in successfully hosting major international sporting events and shared the city’s ongoing investments in modern sports infrastructure, athlete development, and training programs that are shaping the next generation of champions. Ethiopia’s long-standing tradition of hospitality and its welcoming spirit toward international guests were equally highlighted.
Mr. Ridgeon expressed strong appreciation for the broad transformation underway in Addis Ababa and recognized the government’s clear commitment to expanding sports infrastructure and creating the conditions to host world-class competitions. He further reaffirmed World Athletics’ interest in deepening partnership with Ethiopia as the country advances its global sporting aspirations.
