The expansion of non-motorized transport in Addis Ababa is contributing to efforts to reduce air pollution in the capital.

Significant progress has been recorded in recent years in expanding access to non-motorized transport as part of efforts to make Addis Ababa a cleaner and less polluted city.

According to Girma Samuel, Director of the Non-Motorized Transport Directorate at the Addis Ababa Transport Bureau, the transport sector accounts for the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions released in the city.

In this regard, a 241-kilometer network of bicycle lanes and around 426 pedestrian walkways have so far been constructed.

He said the city managed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 355,000 metric tons in the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year, while the figure increased to 384,000 metric tons in the 2018 fiscal year.

The director also said the city plans to increase the amount of greenhouse gas emissions reduced to 400,000 metric tons in the upcoming 2019 fiscal year.

He noted that measures are being implemented according to plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the health of the city’s residents.

Addis Ababa has set a goal of achieving “zero emissions” by 2050 and is working toward that target.

The expansion of non-motorized transport will continue to be strengthened, with such efforts expected to make a significant contribution to creating cleaner air and a healthier environment in the city.
