Addis Ababa City Council House Speaker Buzena Alkedir officially opened the City Council’s Second Regular Session of its Fifth-Year Term this morning.
Speaking at the Addis Ababa City Council’s regular session, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said that numerous tourist destinations have been developed across the city over the past six months alone to enhance the tourism industry’s social and economic contribution to Addis Ababa’s growth.
The mayor noted that, as a result of these efforts, the number of international tourists visiting the capital continues to rise steadily.
Addressing council members, Mayor Adanech revealed that out of the 4.7 million domestic tourists initially projected to visit the city during the past six months, 4.9 million tourists have actually visited Addis Ababa, exceeding the target.
Addressing the Addis Ababa City Council, Mayor Adanech Abiebie further emphasized that public, religious, and cultural festivals celebrated in the city, along with the expansion of sports and health tourism, have played a significant role in driving this growth.
According to the mayor, nearly 700,000 international tourists visited Addis Ababa during the same period, showing a 15 percent increase compared to the corresponding period last year.
Mayor Adanech also underscored that the city’s ongoing and completed development works and mega projects aimed at positioning Addis Ababa as a hub for conference tourism are delivering tangible results, as reflected in the growing number of international summits and major events hosted in the capital
In her address to the Addis Ababa City Council’s regular session, Mayor Adanech Abiebie said that about 150 international and continental events were held in Addis Ababa over the past six months, marking a 50 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Addressing the Addis Ababa City Council during its regular session, Mayor Adanech Abiebie reaffirmed that the strong flow of both domestic and international visitors has enabled the city to generate 155 billion birr in revenue for the national economy during the past six months alone.
