Addressing the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa marked at Adwa Victory Memorial, Mayor of Addis Ababa City Adanech Abiebie stated that the triumph we celebrate today is a source of pride not only for Ethiopia but for all Black people across the world.
The Mayor described Adwa as a symbol of African independence, a beacon of freedom and unity, and a historic testament to courage and heroism. Celebrating this year’s commemoration under the theme, “Glorious Past, Radiant Horizon,” the Mayor emphasized the importance of drawing lessons from the gallantry of our forebears while renewing our commitment to the future prosperity of our nation.
The Mayor noted that one of the most important lessons the Victory of Adwa teaches us is that, despite internal differences, Ethiopians must stand united when it comes to safeguarding national sovereignty and the country’s reputation. The heroes and heroines of Adwa set aside their grievances and differences, and through the sacrifice of their blood and bones, passed on to us a resilient Ethiopia.
The Mayor called upon the current generation to remain grounded in this spirit of heroism. She urged them to address differences through dialogue and to recognize their historic responsibility to stand united in protecting national interests and preserving the country’s dignity.
The Mayor further underscored that heroism extends beyond the battlefield. True heroism today requires each citizen to play their part in the journey toward Ethiopia’s prosperity.
Contemporary heroism, she said, is not only about defeating invading forces but also about overcoming poverty, backwardness, and division. Just as the heroes of Adwa defended the nation’s honor, we too bear the responsibility to safeguard our sovereignty against any form of provocation and to ensure sustainable development and prosperity.
In this regard, the Mayor highlighted national flagship initiatives such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the wheat self-sufficiency initiative aimed at ensuring food security and boosting exports, the Green Legacy Initiative, and the ongoing urban transformation efforts to beautify Addis Ababa.
